She Says, He Hears

I'm sure you can identify with this quote from Alan Greenspan:

"I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."

Truthfully, this can apply to all relationships - but especially marriage.

In fact, you may be surprised to know what your husband actually hears... and if you did, would you think twice before saying it?

You say...

Did you fill out the scholarship form yet? We don't want to get a lateness penalty.

and he hears...

I don't trust you to take care of your responsibilities.

You say...

Thanks for washing the dishes, but why did you leave them in the drying rack instead of putting them away?

and he hears...

Whatever you do for me, it's never enough.

You say...

No thanks, I can carry these heavy boxes myself.

and her hears...

I'm rejecting what you want to give me.

Uh, oh - are you starting to get a little uncomfortable?

The good thing is - once you start understanding his filter, you can use it to the advantage of your relationship.

So when you say...

Thank you.  I knew I could count on you.

He will hear...

You're my hero. I love you.

And when you say...

Can I borrow your brain? I have a problem and I need your advice.

He will hear...

I trust you. You have good ideas.

And when you say...

Welcome home! I'm so happy to see you!

He will hear...

You're my knight in shining armor. Thank you for everything you do.

When have you said something to your husband - and found that he heard something totally different from what you intended?
